It’s a Wrap!

A subject that a lot of us think about now after watching The Blue Planet is the amount of plastic we use in everyday life.

I’ve started to think a lot about the wrapping we use in the floristry industry and whether we really need to use as much as we do. I’m also considering other materials such as the foam which we use for arrangements and also decorative items too. Some cellophane used in the wrapping process is biodegradable and now a lot of the floral foam is being made to be sustainable but I still think we could use less.

I have been using a new box for the boxed aqua bouquets which means using less cellophane around the bouquet and providing more focus on the flowers rather than the wrapping. When you unwrap a birthday present you do tend to cast away the wrapping and it is what’s inside which is important. So the new Floralbox consists of the box itself and a plastic bag to hold the water, the bouquet is literally placed within the plastic liner and the boxed secured together, and that’s it, less cellophane overpowering the flowers. Yes we do still have to use a plastic bag but it is a start to improving the use of unnecessary material

Before these new boxes we would make an aqua bag around the stems using cellophane and then wrap the bouquet itself in more cellophane so you can see the amount of wrapping is reduced considerably. The bags in these new boxes are really thick and if washed out really well you could actually re use them for other purposes. I have been using the hessian wrap for some of my bouquets and raffia to tie them off with. The hessian like some cellophane patterns can be re used in crafting projects such as collages or used in card making, I am also happy to take the hessian back and reuse in other projects myself.

It is something that I am going to think of a lot in the future of Suzy Blues. There may be instances when we need to use certain materials but wherever possible I am going to make sure we remain as sustainable as possible for David Attenborough, and the planet of course.
